Financial Statement Analysis with Large Language Models

We provide standardized and anonymous financial statements to GPT4... Even without any narrative or industry-specific information, the LLM outperforms financial analysts in its ability to predict earnings changes...we find that the LLM generates useful narrative insights about a company's future performance. Lastly, our trading strategies based on GPT's predictions yield a higher Sharpe ratio and alphas than strategies based on other models.

AI headphones let wearer listen to a single person in a crowd, by looking at them just once

Engineers have developed an artificial intelligence system that lets someone wearing headphones look at a person speaking for three to five seconds to 'enroll' them. The system then plays just the enrolled speaker's voice in real time, even as the pair move around in noisy environments.

Testing theory of mind in large language models and humans

At the core of what defines us as humans is the concept of theory of mind: the ability to track other people’s mental states... Across the battery of theory of mind tests, we found that GPT-4 models performed at, or even sometimes above, human levels at identifying indirect requests, false beliefs and misdirection, but struggled with detecting faux pas.

Aurora: A Foundation Model of the Atmosphere

Foundation models hold the promise to also transform our ability to model our planet and its subsystems…introduce Aurora…leverages the strengths of the foundation modelling approach to produce operational forecasts for a wide variety of atmospheric prediction problems, including those with limited training data, heterogeneous variables, and extreme events. In under a minute, Aurora produces 5-day global air pollution predictions and 10-day high-resolution weather forecasts

No humans needed: AI robots discover new laser materials on their own

Automated labs across the globe create, test, and assemble light-emitting compounds that could be used in advanced displays and telecom devices...The effort produced 621 new compounds, including 21 that rivaled state-of-the-art laser emitters and one that emits blue laser light more efficiently than any other organic material...The previous decade of research only produced about a dozen of these materials.

Video: $16k G1 humanoid rises up to smash nuts, twist and twirl

The G1 looks like a much more complete package than the H1 before it, having been treated to a helmet head and illuminated visage (packing 3D LiDAR sensors and a depth camera) as well as human-like robotic hands for the floor exercises and three-fingered grippers to show off its skills in the home and workplace.
